The Akbadain Ruins is a location near Stansbury. It is believed that it houses ancient treasure in its ruins since it was previously land belonging to an ancient civilization called the Azrans. The Akbadain Ruins were created to house the Azran's biggest and most precious treasures here. 18 years prior to the events of Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Randall Ascot had fallen through a giant hole in the floor here since Hershel Layton accidentally stepped on a button located on the floor.
The ruins contain eight floors, each housing many rooms, puzzles, and traps.
The Akbadain Ruins can be explored in a top-down adventure mode, a play style exclusive to Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. The ruins are navigated using the D-Pad or the touch screen's arrows. Many puzzles, hint coins and collectible items can be found within the ruins through glowing patches of dirt, which can be dug up by pressing the A button or the "Dig" button on the touch screen. Hershel will also have to push many boulders causing obstruction, which again can be done using the A button. Your current location can be viewed by tapping the map icon in the left-hand corner. The player can also speak to Randall by tapping the "Talk" button, should they be in need of any tips.
Besides normal rooms, two types of special chambers appear throughout the ruins: Puzzle Chambers and Mummy Chambers. Puzzle Chambers involve Hershel having to push numerous boulders around the room, so that one boulder will fill the hole leading to the next room. In a Mummy Chamber, Hershel and Randall must work their way towards two buttons on the other side of the chamber while avoiding mechanical mummies. These mummies can be defeated by making them fall into holes dug by Hershel, or pushing boulders into them. Both of these rooms allow you to "run" from them, should the player wish to start from the beginning.
