Andrew is a short man, who looks like he may be quite old. He wears a brown hat with a blue brim around it. He has short gray hair, with a grey beard and mustache. He wears a brown button-down shirt, with a white undershirt and a blue polka-dot tie. He wears brown pants and black shoes. He wears a darker brown coat that reaches down to his ankles.
Throughout Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Schrader portrays a kind, caring personality towards his Ex-Students, including Professor Layton. His obsession with seeking out the mystery of the Elysian Box may suggest a determined nature, similar to one which Professor Layton has.
Andrew Schrader gives the following puzzles in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future:
At the start of the game, Dr. Schrader send Professor Layton a letter:
"My Dear Hershel,
Knowing you, I imagine you've already heard of the relic known as the Elysian Box. This strange antique is infamous for killing anyone who opens it. Truth be told, I'm a bit dubious of the box's murderous reputation. But you know how I am. Once something piques my interest, I simply must get to the bottom of it. That's why I'm pleased as punch to tell you that the elusive item is finally in my possession. What's more, I believe I'm on the cusp of unraveling a great mystery tied to this box. For the moment, let's just say I have a theory, though I haven't been able to prove it yet. initially, it was my intention to finish my research before daring to open its lid. But I must confess that my curiosity is simply overpowering. In the unlikely event that anything should happen to me, please finish the work I've started here.
When Layton and Luke arrive, however, he is found dead.
It isn't until the end of the game when they solve the mystery of the Diabolical Box, that Schrader wasn't actually dead. It was because the pollen inside the case made people see or feel what they were thinking when the box was opening, and due to the myth that people die when they open the box, Schrader was put in a death like state and was later "revived".
An older version of Dr. Andrew Schrader is found located in the Green Hospital, Ward 2, Room 312. Later on in the game, it is recognized by Professor Layton that this was not an older version of Andrew Schrader, and that in fact it was Don Paolo in disguise, spying on the team's progress. Professor Layton seen through Don Paolo's disguise when he said "Oh, why it's you, Hershel, and little Luke!", this shows that he hadn't realized that Luke had changed over time.
Dr. Andrew Schrader doesn't appear as a character in the game. However, it is later revealed when Emmy goes back to the London Museum to look for Inspector Clamp Grosky that dinosaur bones located in the museum have been donated by Dr. Schrader.
"After opening the box, the doctor falls into a coma so deep that even the inspector believes him to be deceased. Luckily, this proves not to be the case, and his subsequent recovery is sure to be documented in medical journals for years to come."
"Dr. Andrew Schrader is Professor Layton's and Don Paolo's old teacher. He is a highly respected archaeologist but has a tendency to get himself into trouble and often needs to be rescued by his students. His collection of antiques is legendary."
