Don Paolo has acted as the series' main antagonist in the first trilogy of games, being Layton's self-proclaimed archenemy. Previous to the plot of Professor Layton and the Curious Village he was a high caliber scientist but was expelled from his field due to his sinister mannerisms.
Don Paolo is later revealed at the end of the game when he takes off his Inspector Chelmey disguise. He tried to frame Professor Layton as the murderer of Simon Reinhold by making him touch the vase that Simon had been 'killed' with. He tries to kill Layton on several occasions, on one such occasion he tried to crush him by disjointing a Ferris wheel from is support stand, causing it to role toward Layton and his apprentice, Luke.
Don Paolo waits around in Dropstone until Professor Layton, Luke and Flora decide to find the Livestock Competition. When Flora is separated from the group, Don Paolo kidnaps her and locks her in a nearby barn. He disguises as Flora until the end of the game when it is revealed that he to stolen the Elysian Box from his old tutor, Dr. Andrew Schrader in a bid to find out it's secret.
It is revealed during the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future that Don Paolo holds a strong hating towards Layton because Layton's, now late girlfriend, Claire fell in love with Layton rather than him. He was heartbroken and slowly receded into the bitter, twisted, and creepy looking man we see today. His hate was only fueled when he learned that Claire had died because of the first trial run of a time machine. Paolo accused Layton of not protecting her better on that day and vowed to take revenge. His motives change at the end of Unwound Future however, as he teams up with Layton in order to save London from catastrophe.
Don Paolo appears as a cameo in the beginning of Eternal Diva. Being disguised as an elderly woman, he is uncovered by Professor Layton as the culprit for silencing the Big Ben's bell. After taking off his disguise, he starts to fly away with his modified umbrella.
Don has brown hair that points out on two sides and a moustache and beard. He wears a white shirt with a teal tie, and a purple coat with a red collar. He wears red pants and black shoes.
Don can be seen as a bad person, often using disguises to spy on Layton and Luke. He seeks revenge on Layton ever since Layton and Claire have been dating. It also says in his profile that he enjoys listening to music. However, Don Paolo changes his normal revengeful actions towards Professor Layton by teaming up with them to defeat Clive and Dimitri Allen in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.
