File No. 007: The Mystery Rooms is the seventh case presented in Layton Brothers: Mystery Room. This case is requested by Hilda Pertinax and investigates a new lead on Mariana Etista, who was located in a run-down house, but is however hiding away in a secret room. This is the first case that doesn't involve a murder, and therefore there would be no victims or suspects.

Contents

[edit] Evidence

Music box: A clockwork music box. Unfortunately the winder is missing, so it doesn't play.
Upper drawer: The top drawer of a small chest of drawers used for storage. It's old, but the drawer moves freely.
Lower drawer: The bottom drawer of a small chest of drawers used for storage. It's old, but the drawer moves freely.
Swish key: A key that was hidden inside the music box. It's very ornately decorated, and would appear to be rather special.
Rickety key: A rusty old key that looks like it's about to break at any moment.
Broken key: The end of this key has snapped off. It could still just about be useful for something, perhaps, but not its original purpose.
Tweezers: A no-fuss pair of tweezers. At their tip they are very fine, and should be able to grip onto small objects in very tight spaces.
Bed: A musty-smelling bed. The bedding is very damp, and has a questionable odor.
Staircase: These stairs lead out of the cellars. However, Etista can't have escaped, as officers have been guarding the top the entire time.
Cabinet: A display cabinet with glass doors that are locked shut.
Cow goblet: A large cup sporting an emblem of a cow. It has no obvious special qualities, and is probably good for holding a liquid, but not much else.
Rhino goblet: A large cup sporting an emblem of a rhino. It has no obvious special qualities, and is probably good for holding a liquid, but not much else.
Dog goblet: A large cup sporting an emblem of a dog. It has no obvious special qualities, and is probably good for holding a liquid, but not much else.
Pig goblet: A large cup sporting an emblem of a pig. It has no obvious special qualities, and is probably good for holding a liquid, but not much else.
Gran Smith's Diet: A book about dieting on apples. It seems the occupant of this place had an interest in losing weight.
Tea Total: A book all about how to brew tea. It's an extremely in-depth guide to the drink.
Cat Compendium: A guide to the many different breeds of cat in the world. A heavy tome filled from cover to cover with feline facts.
Identikit Cars: A book about cars through the ages. It opens with the claim that it's possible to identify the era a car comes from simply by looking at it.
Pointed note: It reads: 'Hornless is the beast that leads the way'.
Crumpled note: It reads: 'Swine follows after canine'.
Old note: It reads: 'Bovine comes before swine'.
Smelly note: It reads: 'Horned is the last beast to go, the flames dying in its wake'.
Fireplace: The fire inside is roaring, fueled as it is by a great many logs.
Clock: A wall clock with a very unusual design on its face.
Bathroom door: The locked door to the bathroom. There's no sign of a keyhole anywhere.
Note on door: A slip of paper that reads: 'WC from three o'clock'.
Toilet: A very dirty toilet that you'd really rather not use. The flush handle moves, but it doesn't work.
Bathtub: An empty bathtub. The plug is missing, so it couldn't be filled.
Tap: A rather slimy tap. It seems to be connected up because water flows from it.

[edit] Plot

Note: There are varying ways to complete the game, each going off in a different direction. However the overall plot is unchanged.

Lucy Baker arrives at Scotland Yard, realizing she was late. She could hear voices in the Mystery Room. She could hear Alfendi Layton talking about how he knew something was wrong with him, but before she could ponder what he was talking about, a woman walks out into the hall, remarking on Lucy's rudeness for eavesdropping. Before Lucy can say anything else, she leaves once again.

A day out of the office

Lucy greets Alfendi upon entering the room, asking about the woman she had encountered in the hall. Before she could say anything further, Alfendi informs her that a new lead was found on Mariana Etista, with a great chance of being able to apprehend her. Lucy asks Alfendi to remind her who Etista was, and he reminds her she was the mastermind behind the walking corpse case. Alfendi had discovered the Stone Idol she had taken with her was being auctioned off on the black market, and had been hiding out in a home in the Lake District, and was cornered. However, there were many tricks and traps there that prevented the team from finding her, and that a secret room was supposedly there. They were to investigate the scene, but instead of using the Reconstruction Device, it was upon special request that they investigate the real scene, by Hilda Pertinax, who Lucy had encountered earlier. Once Alfendi had left, Lucy remarks to herself that she thought she'd never see Alfendi step out of the office.

[edit] Case Summary

Alfendi and Lucy set off on a train to head for the scene, however Alfendi didn't appear as he was enjoying himself. After countless changes, they finally arrive at an old, dilapidated mansion, to find the secret room in which Mariana Etista was hiding.

[edit] Investigation

The Scene

Alfendi comments on his disgust for having to take the train to reach the scene, and, while his "Potty Prof" side appears, further shows his disgust for having to come to a "dank hole". "Placid Prof" then reappears, apologizing for letting himself get a little too emotional. Lucy wondered where all the other officers could be, and Alfendi noted that Hilda would have arranged for them to keep out of the way, and had left the scene exactly how she found it. Lucy was excited to be investigating a real-life crime scene for the first time, and didn't want anything to spoil it. As Alfendi was about to leave to let her go about the investigations, she calls him back, as she didn't know what to do, and he tells her to locate the secret room where Etista was hiding.

A bookshelf in the room is investigated, and is found that four books in particular are jutting out. Alfendi deducts that these books must be pushed back in. Lucy then jumps at the sound of a strange noise, and then Alfendi considers these jutted out books to be part of a trap, and that everything should be assumed to be a trap. Lucy then tries pushing all the books back in the shelf, but they pop out of place again. Lucy giggles at Alfendi's remark of calling her a daredevil, however he says it wasn't a compliment. He then thinks that there is a certain order for the books to be pushed, and so he asks Lucy to search the room for clues.

They find a music box sitting on a table, however if didn't have a winder and therefore the music couldn't be played. They then find a locked cabinet in the corner of the room. As Lucy was about to smash the glass door, Alfendi warns her not to, as it may render the trap useless and unable for them to advance further, and so they must find the cabinet's key. The two inspectors then find a locked door in a hallway, however the door didn't have a keyhole. Lucy thinks that Etista must be behind the door, but Alfendi has the impression that she must be hiding elsewhere, and thinks there is a special way to open the door. A note on this door is also found, which simply reads that there is a toilet behind the door.

Coming back to the locked cabinet, Alfendi and Lucy find that an old, rickety key they had found is used to unlock it. Just as Alfendi was telling Lucy to be gentle with it, the key snaps in the keyhole. However, with a pair of tweezers at their disposal, they are able to extract the broken key out of the keyhole. They then return to the music box, to find their broken key can be used as a winder for the box. After winding it up, the lid opens, to find another key in the box. With this key, they are able to unlock the cabinet. However, before they could, Alfendi wished to return to the office, making Lucy wonder why he accepted to come to the scene. He tells Lucy he couldn't refuse Hilda's request, as she works for the Interpol.

Returning back to the bookshelf, with their clues on hand, Lucy pushes the books in the correct order, which in turn unlocks the bathroom door without a keyhole. They make their way to the bathroom, and notice that something can be filled up from the tap at the bathtub, and so they use the tap to fill the goblets up. Alfendi and Lucy wonder what they could possibly use the water for, however going back into the original room, they see a blazing fireplace in which the water could be used to put out the fire. After using the goblets in the correct order to splash the water on the fire, the fireplace lifts up, revealing a secret passageway. Lucy realized that Etista would be down there, and worried if the two of them would be able to handle her, however Alfendi feels that she has no intention of killing them. If this were the case, she would have set up much more dangerous traps for them, although Alfendi finds it hard to imagine that Hilda would be stumped by Etista's large puzzle. He deducts that she wanted him and Etista to meet for an unknown reason, and notes to Lucy that he and Hilda had been close acquaintances for a while.

[edit] Conclusion

Makepeace's deception

Going down into the secret room, they find a young girl who didn't turn out to be Etista. However, after Lucy asks of her identity, she throws on her disguise as Etista, and the girl reveals that her real name is Diane Makepeace. Alfendi recognizes the name, revealing she is the daughter of a man Alfendi had supposedly murdered, Keelan Makepeace. Suddenly, "Potty Prof" appears, and he realizes she was the woman that had helped to take out the Agonnis in the previous case. She tells them they had once betrayed her father, and so killed them. Alfendi realized she was after him next, however she tells him it wasn't the time for it yet, and that he would know when she was ready. Lucy found it unlikely that he would turn up to his own murder, but Makepeace was sure he would be too curious of the happenings at Forbodium Castle. Before another word could be said, she vanishes, however Alfendi decides not to chase her as Hilda's people would have the place surrounded.
