Within the Professor Layton games, the player will come across Puzzles that are extremely challenging. The difficulty of a challenge can he gauged with the number of Picarats available upon the completion of the puzzle. No matter how hard the puzzle is, however, the player will always have the option to look at the hints available.

With every puzzle, 3 hints are given (with the exception of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future in which 4 are available). Each hint does come at a cost however. The player must use one hint coin for every hint they use and use two coins for Super-Hints. Unlike the failure of a puzzle in terms of picarats, the use of hints will not effect the picarats given at the end.

[edit] Hint Coins

Hint Coins are the currency needed in order to gain excess information about a puzzle. They can be found by tapping certain objects in the overworld. The locations of hint coins aren't obvious thus random tapping is usually the source of finding their location. One can note if they find a hint coin if they tap on an object and a tiny coin will pop out and a pinging noise will be heard. Although there is no specific way to find a hint coin, some locations can be obvious by seeing a broken latern or an out of place barrel. Finding hint coins can be made easier with the use of the Gizmo, Macaroon's Hamster, Parrot or Fish.

[edit] Hint Levels and Types

Hints are unlocked in order. For example the player cannot access Hint 2 without first accessing Hint 1.

[edit] Hint 1

This is the vaguest of the 3 (or 4) hints available. They tend to only give you a helping hand as to what direction you should be going in order to figure the puzzle out. However more often than not, the hint given was obvious from the start of the puzzle

[edit] Hint 2

This, naturally, will be more specific than Hint 1 but won't reveal much more concerning the actual answer.

[edit] Hint 3

These will do most of the work for you, and will often give a huge hint as to what the answer actually is. Meaning less work is needed from the player.

[edit] Super Hint

This has only become available in Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the Last Specter and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. Unlike the other hints, these cost 2 hint coins.

[edit] Wrong Answer

Usually when the player fails a puzzle, a subtle hint will be given free of charge, meaning no hint coins will be needed to access it. However not all puzzle have this feature, and on more occasions it will simply say "Try Again".
