[edit] Plot

Several years before the events of Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Jean lived with her parents in Labyrinthia from a young age. At some point, she discovered she was a witch, and wanted to test her powers by turning something to gold with her Talea Magica. Before she could cast the spell Goldor on a leaf, her best friend Margaret, a goat, stepped in front of her sceptre and was turned to gold.

Jean couldn't accept the fact that she was a witch, and so attempted to commit suicide by throwing herself into a river. Newton Belduke found her and retrieved her from the river, allowing her to work as his butler so long as she pretended to be a boy.

Three months before the events of the game, Jean and Belduke witnessed the bell tower reappearing in the town square, making Belduke agitated. Several days later, Belduke began writing a suicide note to the Storyteller, followed by ingesting a strong poison, killing him instantly. Jean assumed that he was writing about her being a witch, and so created a portal from her room to steal the letter and replace the contents with blank parchment. She also choked Belduke without a struggle, thinking he had taken the soporifics she injected in his tomato juice. Since the incident, she has believed she killed Belduke.
