The area consists of a large phoenix statue located on a pedestal in the center, surrounded by a variety of buildings. A grapevine can be seen growing to the left of the statue, with a barrel of grapes located next to it. A number of dead trees are located around the statue.
Chapter 4: The Hunt for the Eggs
Professor Layton and the group move onto Phoenix Square, hoping to find people in the area. Emmy immediately notices a large golden phoenix statue, speculating it could be part of the city's legend. Professor Sycamore quickly disproves this, as gold meant little to the Azran. They soon hear a voice coming from the Mosinnia City Gate, and rush over there quickly.
In their quest to look for leads on the phoenix, the group encounter Temir, who tells the group of a large bird he had seen past Mosinnia Forest. Even though the townspeople were forbidden to go into the forest, the group take this as a strong lead and decide to head there themselves.
The group return to Temir to ask him about what had happened when the adults had fallen asleep, and he reveals that they had a festival the night before in celebration of the phoenix. Temir was with his father at the time, and had gone to a back room without him, thinking he had gone for "sevenths". Emmy deduces that this is when the adults fell asleep, and so they decide to ask around more about the festival. Temir leads them to a girl hanging around Preesha's Hill, despite wanting to play with her.
After solving a riddle at the city gate, the group come back to the square to find the large phoenix statue had disappeared. With a gaping hole not in its place, Professor Sycamore reads the inscription left around the walls:
"Its heart exposed, the phoenix stirs."
"When life's essence flows from the great gate, the ancient bird will rise from slumber."
The group deduce that the riddle were referring to real gates, when Luke suddenly remembers the sluice gate past the forest. Believing they were close to finding the phoenix, the group head back to the forest.
