Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (レイトン教授と超文明Aの遺産, Reiton-kyōju to Chō-Bunmei Ē no Isan) is the sixth game in the Professor Layton Series and the third in the second trilogy in the series. The game is set one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, and includes an exciting array of new characters along with old favorites like Professor Layton, Luke Triton and Emmy Altava. The game will be the last game to include Professor Layton as the main protagonist. The game was first released in Japan on February 28th, 2013, later followed by Europe on November 8th, 2013, and in North America on February 28, 2014.
The game's release was announced on the 29th of August 2012 in a Nintendo Direct presentation, assisted by LEVEL-5 CEO Akirino Hino.
Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy is an adventure and puzzle game. To move around each different area, the player must tap highlighted orange circles on the Touch Screen's map. To switch to Investigation Mode, the magnifying glass in the top-right corner of the Touch Screen can be tapped. Slide the stylus along the Touch Screen to move the magnifying glass on the top screen around; the magnifying glass will turn orange where a Hint Coin or hidden puzzle is located, or when a character or object can be interacted with, or will turn blue when an area can be zoomed in to. Cloud shapes will appear from the magnifying glass when a collection item is located.
Professor Layton and the others have the ability to use the Bostonius in order to travel to the many different locations around the world. Tap the Bostonius icon next to the magnifying glass in order to select a destination to travel to, or go to the Bostonius manually and tap the LCD screen at the head of the aircraft. The player will also be able to embark on side quests and solving mysteries along their adventures around the world.
There are many puzzle types in this game, including sliding puzzles, brain teasers, and logic puzzles. Upon accepting the puzzle, the player is presented with a number of Picarats that determines the difficulty of a puzzle. Hint Coins can be used to provide a maximum of three hints for each puzzle, as well as a Super Hint, in order to gain as much Picarats as possible. Hint Coins are in limited supply, however, and can be found throughout the many locations in which the group travel to, however the player starts off with 10 Hint Coins at the beginning of the game. The player can also use the Memo Pad on the Touch Screen to note down any working in solving the puzzle. Once the player has submitted their answer by either selecting an option, circling an option, or manually writing the answer, the character solving the puzzle (which can either be Professor Layton, Luke, Emmy, Desmond Sycamore, Aurora or Jean Descole) will appear and indicate whether the answer is correct or not. If correct, the number of Picarats presented will be added to the total. However, if an answer is incorrect, Picarats will be deducted from the puzzle, and the player can attempt the puzzle again. Picarats will be deducted from the puzzle a total of two times; after that, the player will be able to input an incorrect answer without losing any more Picarats. If the player acquires enough Picarats throughout the story, extra content can be unlocked within the Bonus section, such as character profiles, soundtracks, and cut scenes. If the player is wanting to attempt the puzzle at a later time, they are able to quit the puzzle at no cost. To attempt the puzzle again, the player must find the person who had issued it to them, however it will be sent to Keats if it is left unsolved by a certain point in the story. Some puzzles cannot be avoided, however, as solving them is required to advance through the game. Advancing through certain points in the game also requires the player to have solved a certain amount of puzzles, so skipping too many will not allow one to advance.
When a puzzle is solved correctly, the player can receive a reward as well as Picarats; a piece of clothing for the Dress Up mini-game, a course to guide a nut to its goal in Nutty Roller, or a garden to bring back to bloom in Bloom Burst. Completing all mini-games will unlock extra puzzles in Professor Layton's Challenges in the Bonus section. After solving all 150 puzzles in the main story, extra puzzles will be unlocked within this section. Solving these extra 12 puzzles will finally unlock an extra three puzzles, and upon completing those, extra content will be unlocked, such as extra character profiles. The player can also download a puzzle every day for a whole year after the release of the game, but will start with 20 already downloaded. When all of these puzzles are solved, an extra 20 will be unlocked, bringing the total amount of puzzles in the game to 570, the most of any game in the series. These puzzles can be acquired over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Extra bonuses can be unlocked through the Hidden Door, in which the player must input a password from Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. These passwords do not work unless both games have been recognized on the same 3DS system.
Professor Layton receives a letter from a fellow archaeologist, Desmond Sycamore, who has found a living mummy encased in ice. Along with his apprentice Luke and assistant Emmy, they set off in the Bostonius to the snowy town of Froenborg to investigate the mummy. When she is set free from her icy prison, she reveals that her name is Aurora, and is the last of the ancient Azran Civilization remaining. Before long, a corrupted group by the name of Targent take away the girl, leaving the team to embark on a journey around the world to reveal the mystery of the Azran's hidden treasure, which Targent is after themselves.
