[edit] Pre-Game

At a very young age, Hershel Layton and Jean Descole lived with their biological parents, Leon and Rachel Bronev. They were kidnapped by Targent, due to their research on the Azran Civilization. Roland, as well as his wife Lucille, heard of the news, and so adopted Hershel, however Descole was originally supposed to be adopted.

They took Hershel to London, and later in his teens, moved to Stansbury for three years before moving back to London, so that Hershel could study archaeology at Gressenheller University. Roland currently lives in London with his wife.

Chapter 2: The Secret of Norwell
Roland had gone off with a group of strange people who wanted to see the Wall of Norwell, which left Lucille in a worry. She asked Hershel to look for him, and after locating him on the edge of town, he told him they were tourists who were interested in seeing the Wall of Norwell, and so showed them the way. Hershel couldn't imagine Stansbury as a tourist location, however Roland tells him that the Wall of Norwell attracted many archaeologists and researchers to try and decipher its secrets. He suggests they head home as to not worry Lucille any further. Upon returning home, he reminded Lucille that the people that came for him were his friends, and not to worry.

Once Lucille calls the family to dinner, they discuss Hershel's day at school, and he tells them about the fencing bout he had with Randall. Lucille asks who would be going through to the next fencing tournament, but Hershel tells her he would not let Randall beat him. She offers him pudding, but he declines as he would be going to Randall's house. Roland tells him there wouldn't be any left by the time he got back from the amount he would eat, and Lucille tells him not to stay out too late.

Roland gives Hershel a quick puzzle before he left for Randall's, saying it might be a puzzle Randall would enjoy. Hershel tells him he wasn't interested in puzzles, however.

Chapter 4: Angela's Tears
Roland sees that the group have quickly dropped in for a minute, and so Roland takes the time to give Randall a puzzle, seeing as Hershel didn't seem to enjoy them. Randall had wished his father was more like Roland, and that his own father was too interested in hard work, but Roland tells him that he only cared for him, and wanted to pass down the important lessons.

In a special episode when Hershel returns from Randall's, he tells Roland and Lucille that he was going to bed early. Once he left, Lucille asks Roland who the men that he went out with were, and he tells her that they were a group of archaeologists who wanted to see the Wall of Norwell. He also tells her he didn't know why they wanted to see Hershel, and after Lucille expresses her worry, he suggests they both have some cocoa.
