    You know, the puzzle never specified that everybody was standing in the same direction...

    What gender is the child?

    The child is a male!

    Did you figure out yet? It sure makes things a lot easier, doesn't it?

    With that in mind, a male child standing behind an adult male, both of whom have their backs to an adult female, fulfills all of the conditions. That's it!
